St. Emmelia

The Patron Saint of our homeschool group is St. Emmelia. Her day of commemoration is May 8. After preparing several to choose from, Father Peter took our list to Bishop Basil, and he so wonderfully chose St. Emmelia for us. What a fitting saint!

She was the mother of St Basil the Great, St. Macrina, St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Peter of Sebaste. She had wanted to remain a life-long virgin, but was forced to marry. She bore nine children, and so thoroughly grounded them in Christian discipleship that at least four became recognized Saints in the Church. She founded a monastery in her old age, where she lived with her daughter Macrina, and where she entered into rest in the Lord on May 8th, 375. She is patron to those named Emily.

Her Troparion (Tone 1) is:

Through thee the divine likeness was securely preserved, O Mother Emmelia; for thou didst carry the cross and follow Christ. By example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body because it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying soul. Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.
