Father Peter Smith was appointed to the pastorate of Saint Mary Orthodox Christian Church on July 1, 2004. Fr. Peter formerly served as the Pastor of Saint George Orthodox Church in Vicksburg, MS and, prior to that, as Assistant Pastor of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Montreal, Canada.
Fr. Peter was born in Auburn, CA in 1967 and raised in the Santa Cruz area of Northern California. The son of an evangelical pastor, he was raised in a very devout Christian home. In 1986 he graduated valedictorian from Northstate Christian High School and soon began his university studies at California State University at Sacramento, from which he later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government. It was there that he met his future wife, Collette. It was also during these years that he began to better understand the history and worship of the authentic Christian Tradition - Holy Orthodoxy. Fr. Peter and Collette were both brought into the Orthodox Church in 1994 by the hand of Bishop BASIL (then auxiliary, now Bishop of the Diocese of Wichita and Mid-America) at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Ben Lomond, CA. Shortly thereafter he was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop BASIL and assigned to the new Orthodox Mission which he and Collette, along with several other families, helped start in Fairfield, CA (now Saint Timothy Orthodox Church).
In 1997, Fr. Peter received a blessing from Metropolitan-Archbishop PHILIP (Antiochian Archdiocese)to begin his theological studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. While in seminary, he served (first as deacon, later as second Priest) at Saint Mary Orthodox Church in Cambridge, MA. He was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop Demetri (retired) on October 4, 1998. He received his Master of Theological Studies degree from Holy Cross in 1999. Though desiring to remain in the Boston area and continue his theological studies, in the summer of 2000 he was assigned to the Assistant Pastorate of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Montreal, Canada. Here he served for one year until his assignment to the Pastorate of Saint George Orthodox Church in Vicksburg, MS. After four years in Mississippi, Fr. Peter was asked to come to Saint Mary Orthodox Church in Wichita and was formally assigned to the Pastorate of Saint Mary on July 1, 2004.
Fr. Peter and Khouriya Collette were married in 1988. They have one child, Maria (b. 1999) and are currently in the process of adopting a little boy from Russia.
